From the two ideas you have, obviously the second one is the better one.
My preference would be for you to tackle a social awareness issue and get your hands dirty with the nitty-grity of a campaign where as a designer you are asked to come up with real life solutions.
Nevertheless, if you go for the second option, then you need to be unique and original. My concern with this idea is that it has a transient life-span and ideally you want to put pieces on your portfolio that will last the test of time. Get your mind into something that has a wider potential appeal, and as a portfolio piece it can be more significant.
Lastly, I was not able to post this comment because your blog settings asks for word verification which does not seem to work on my browser. Any chance of switching it off?
